I heard some very sad news yesterday, Dr. Bernard Rimland, founder of the The Autism Society of America (ASA) and the Autism Research Institute passed away on November 21.

Dr Rimland dedicated his life to the study of autism after his son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2 in 1958. Dr Rimland went on to write “Infantile Autism: The Syndrome and Its Implications for a Neural Theory of Behavior”, which helped dispell the long held belief that autism was a result of poor maternal skills. Thanks to the tireless efforts of Dr Rimland, autism is now recognised as being a biomedical disorder.

His desire to understand and discover new ways of treating Autism lead him to start the RSI and ASA. Some of his treatment methods which were once considered outside of the sphere of traditional medicine are now widely gaining acceptance giving many parents hope.

No matter what your view on some of his more radical methods and treatment options Dr Rimland was a force for good, an advocate for every individual with autism to be treated with respect and dignity. His dedication and passion for furthering research into understanding and overcoming autism were emense. His legacy will continue through the work of the ASA and the RSI.
