Despite much published information on the matter most people still don’t really understand the possible link between mercury poisoning and autism.  And this is understandable, due to the highly controversial and conflicting nature of the published material.  But there is a connection, and this article will outline the treating mercury poisoning autism connection, while understanding its meaning in the modern medicinal world.

Overview

Before we talk about the link between mercury poisoning and autism, let’s define what being on autistic spectrum order really entails.  Because autism is a disorder that affects the nervous system, it is classified as a neurological disorder.  This classification becomes important when we consider one of the causes of neurological disorders is thought to be over-exposure to toxins such as heavy metals, namely mercury and aluminum.

Recently, the number of neurological disorders prevalent in children has increased significantly.  Though the cause of this increase is not completely known, and is debated spiritedly in academic circles, one theory suggests that young children being exposed to heavy metals is one of the biggest reasons for the increased diagnosis of neurological disorders.

The theorists behind this idea are adamant about it, but can mercury really cause autism?  Many of these people believe so.  They claim that high levels of mercury in our food, air, and water are to blame, especially when very young children are exposed to them.

So, it there a treatment? Yes, there is a new type of treatment based on the aforementioned theory.  Referred to as biomedical treatment, this treatment attempts to “cure” autism by attacking the root of the problem, which they claim is toxic damage to neurological systems.

Conversely, the majority of medical professionals more widely agree that autism is a psychological disease, not a physical one.  But biomedical experts claim that the psychological symptoms exhibited by autistic children secondary symptoms due to damage of the nervous system.  That is why they believe that repairing damage to the nervous system, or stimulating the body repair damage, will actually reduce the effects of autism.

Ultimately, biomedical treatment has one goal – to rid the body of all toxic substances and begin to repair damage suffered as a result of exposure to these toxins.  Once again, it is important to note that this method is not widely accepted as an effective medical treatment, and in fact is not accepted that widely at all.

In spite of this, there are several popular treatment methods that have grown out of the biomedical treatment camp.  While differing in their strategy, each has the ultimate goal of decreasing harmful toxins and boosting needed nutrients.

There are many possible reasons that this new and controversial treatment method has not been universally accepted.  This could be simply due to it’s recent appearance in the medical world.  It could also be due to a lack of completed studies.  Whatever the cause of the lack of universal acceptance, the movement is gaining momentum non-the-less.  Much of the support, in fact, is coming from parents who claim to have seen improvements in their own children after following the treatment programs.  If you’re looking for a new “natural” angle to combating the effects of autism, it may be worth taking a look, then exploring the treating mercury poisoning autism connection further may be worthwhile.
